HISTORY of West Hills Homes Association

The West Hills Home Association was incorporated in 1939, modelled on the J.C. Nichols Associations in Kansas City. The West Hills area was located outside the city limits until 1949. Since the area is now developed, the purpose of the Association went from insuring that the area developed in an orderly manner to insuring that the neighborhood did not suffer a decline and to provide certain services for the membership. The Association is governed by a 6-member Board of Directors. The Association also owns the wooded area on the East Side of Emery Road commonly called the Bird Sanctuary.

SCOPE and CONTENTS

The West Hils Homes Association records date from 1925-2011. They include Association Declarations, deeds, charters, state documents, and by-laws from various years. Other offical documents include minutes of annual mettings, Treasurer's reports, proposed budgets, and legal documents. There are also various financial records, correspondence between the Association and various people, newsletters, and many newspaper clippings related to the WHHA. There are records of protests of KU's 20 year plan from 1996 as well. Also in the collection are photographs of the neighborhood as well as the Bird Sanctuary. There is also a large map of the area.
